1. TAKE CONTROL: Realize that you CAN control your actions. You CAN control your response to demands made on you. Successful stress management depends on taking control of your response to stressors. Sometimes it will be easy. Sometimes it will be difficult. In either case, take control. Respond with happy acceptance instead of fighting or fleeing.
2. DUMP WORRY: Much of your stress is a response to things you think MAY happen. Yet 95 percent of what we worry about never happens. Stress management calls for a conscious decision and consistent effort to dump worry. Those who succeed at stress management know that worry makes everything go worse than it might otherwise do. Look for roses on thorn bushes instead of expecting ugly thorns on every rose stem.
3. CONSIDER GOOD: Fix your mind on things that are positive and good. The more consistently you make your thoughts dwell on things that are lovely and pure, the more successful you will be at stress management.
4. ACTIVITIES: Get involved in clean, wholesome activities. Stress management among students of any age should involve activities that are focused on good, positive matters. Dark, violent video/computer games will add to stress. Stress management benefits from activity that is good-natured, positive amusement or helpful employment.
5. SELF-TALK: Yes, you already engage in self-talk. We all do. For successful stress management, make that self-talk positive. There is nothing to be gained from telling yourself how miserable you are. There is nothing to be gained by constantly berating yourself for failures. Once you have recognized the failure, use self-talk of a positive nature to proactively prepare to do better next time.
6. REPUTATION: Stress management among students must deal with the desire for a good reputation. Reputation is not something that is handed to you. You earn reputation, bad or good. If you focus on earning a good reputation, your stress management efforts will be supported by that focus. Stress management ignores lies told about you, and takes action to control the reputation you are earning.
7. SCORE-KEEPING: To succeed in stress management, you must stop being a score-keeper. A competitive nature is beneficial when kept under control. A competitive nature that drives you to always be at the top of the heap is detrimental. It places heavy demands on you. In as much as score-keeping is necessary, control your response to it. Make it fun and interesting. Refuse to let it torture you.
Stress management is not a secret, mysterious matter that one can only learn through workshops and ongoing lessons. There is one key to stress management. That key is self-control. Self-control enables you to respond appropriately to any stressor that comes into your life.
