Planning the day ahead is an excellent suggestion. If they also spend time visualizing the outcome then it becomes even more productive.

If a student has an important exam tomorrow and they have prepared well then visualizing the feelings they would like to have as they enter the exam room can significantly reduce the stress.

In their visualization the student might see themselves entering the exam room, feeling relaxed and looking forward to the task ahead. They may even visualize themselves being surprised at how relaxed they feel.

Pre-visualization sends signals to the brain preparing it for the challenge so that when the event arrives the appropriate neural networks can switch on to bring the visualization to reality.

The pre-frontal cortex of the human brain is a wonderful tool for managing stress as it enables us to prepare in advance. In other words, we can visualize where we want to go and the brain then plans the journey.

I believe that most students already know about this, yet they do the opposite.

And I think that's because they may feel that they have no time to think about the stressor. Who could blame them? They have a busy schedule for studying and the pressure of exam also in their mind. Cooling down is the first and best option for them to reduce their stress.
